The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, the first in the nation, was used to build and repair naval vessels until the 1990s, when it was closed. Throughout that time, workers were exposed to asbestos which was used as an insulator to prevent on-board fires and therefore the dangers that it is linked to, including the cancer mesothelioma.
